The intent for this piece was to go alongside the marketing on starwars.com for the launch of Death Troopers, but the finish was delayed thanks to my brother's bout with Swine Flu. We went ahead and finished the piece because we really liked the concept we had come up with. Our aim was to build this as an homage to the horror comics of the past. Final composition and digital colors by me in Adobe Photoshop, based off of the original grayscale illustration with Copic Markers by my gifted and talented brother . The grayscale version can be seen on his Deviant page, so clicky the linky!
For my part I just layered color down over his grayscale, making sure to add a little texture so things looked more hand-painted and not too clean like I did it on a computer (which I did). after the colors were done, I used several old Horror Pulp Covers for my inspiration for the drippy letters and overall layout of the cover. After I was happy with all of the pieces, I then added a little grain, slightly blurred the type, yellowed the entire image a little, and sampled the spine wear and creases from an old comic cover to appropriately age the final piece.
Awesome work. Reminds me of Matt Busch’s Starwars posters which I really like. This is a unique take on the zombie stawars concept. I would like to see more.
